“Tap dancing?” Vala asks, and Laura wonders why it is that break dancing exists on at least half a dozen
planets in Pegasus, but tap dancing is an Earth-only phenomenon. “Dancing on taps?” Vala asks, like she can’t
believe this is what Laura means.
Laura laughs. “No. Shoes with metal on the bottom – they tap on the floor
when you step.”
Vala frowns a little. “Why?”
“It’s fun,” Laura says with
a shrug.
“It doesn’t sound like fun,” Vala says dubiously. She licks ice cream from her spoon –
Laura loves the first few days after the Daedalus gets in – and looks up at Laura through her eye lashes.
Laura
sips her tea so she can look down: she doesn’t get Vala, the way she flirts with everyone but always gravitates back
to Dr Jackson, who doesn’t seem to want her. There are worse ways to spend her evening, though, than in the mess with
their temporary alien-in-residence.
“So, tell me more about this tap dancing.” Vala leans her chin on her
clasped hands and smiles.
“Want to see?” Laura offers.

She packed her shoes when she was
told she’d only be allowed one personal item, because they’ve always been good for impromptu team events or impressing
the people who aren’t impressed by her ability to blow stuff up.
“Ready?” she asks.
Vala,
leaning back on Laura’s bed, nods enthusiastically. “Please do.”
Atlantis’ metal floors are
great for tap dancing, and Laura goes through a couple of routines, throwing in a couple of extra spins just for the hell
of it, and ending with a neat hop-step, brushing her hair back where it’s come loose and fallen over her face.
Vala
gives her a little cheer and Laura grins back. “You wanna try?” she offers.
Vala shakes her head, reaches
out a hand to Laura. “No thanks, sweetie. I want you to come here.”

“Hmm,” Vala says
later, stretching like a cat as Laura lies boneless next to her, gasping for breath. “Maybe it is fun after all.”
